7 Work Tasks AI Is Already Doing — and How to Stay the Person Who Can’t Be Replaced

Most talk about AI and jobs is about whole jobs disappearing. In practice, AI takes tasks first. A role changes slowly, one task at a time, until the parts that are left look very different. If you know which tasks go first, you can move ahead of the change instead of being surprised by it.

Here are seven tasks AI tools already do well in offices across India and the world.

1. First drafts of emails and reports

AI writes a decent first draft in seconds. What it can’t do is know which client is upset, or which line will land badly with your manager. Your move: become the person who edits for judgement, not the one who types the draft.

2. Meeting notes and summaries

Transcription and summary tools now produce action lists automatically. Your move: be the person who decides what happens after the meeting and follows it through.

3. Spreadsheet clean-up and basic reports

Sorting, de-duplicating and simple pivots are being automated. Your move: learn to ask better questions of the data, and explain what the numbers mean for the business.

4. First-level customer replies

Chatbots now handle routine queries. Your move: own the difficult cases and the customer relationships that bring repeat business.

5. Research and comparison

AI can scan and summarise dozens of sources quickly. Your move: check what it finds, spot what’s missing, and turn it into a recommendation.

6. Presentation slides

Decks can be generated from an outline. Your move: own the story and the decision the deck is meant to drive.

7. Simple code and formulas

AI writes scripts and formulas for non-programmers. Your move: understand the process well enough to know when the output is wrong.

The pattern

In every case, AI takes the production work. The value moves to judgement, relationships and responsibility. People who make that shift early tend to become more valuable, not less.

A simple 3-step start this week

  1. List your 10 most common weekly tasks. Mark each one “AI can do”, “AI can help” or “needs me”.
  2. Use AI for one “AI can do” task this week, and keep the time you save.
  3. Spend that time on one “needs me” task your manager cares about, and make it visible.
